How we think about God and the Bible
John Robinson, that "there is yet more light and truth to break forth from God's word." We are not afraid of questions; in fact, we welcome them. While respectful of our tradition, we are open to new insights, interpretations and applications. Joan
We come from a variety of religious backgrounds and commitments but have now come together at Park Hill Congregational Church. We enjoy and gain strength through our fellowship with each other, and our fellowship thrives because of our diversity of beliefs. We encompass a broad spectrum of belief -- from those with a long-standing, firmly-rooted faith in a personal God, to those who are still searching for a reasoned commitment to a conventional religious experience.
We seek through our community and in ourselves a deeper realization of the wonder of creation and a greater openness to life-renewing events. We seek a more profound sense of our possibilities and of our calling. Our religion is both a source of strength and a conscience that makes demands of us.
We do not seek a dogmatic faith. We are not looking for simple, formulaic answers. Rather, we seek a church that helps us to examine, learn and understand. The music and rituals of our Christian heritage are meaningful to us. We also want to learn from those relevant philosophers and thinkers whose insights and interpretations serve to strengthen our understanding and faith.
We profess and seek an open-ended faith that is inclusive in its encounter with everyday life. Our faith is in a common communion with God and the presence of God in nature, life and history. We find inspiration in the prophetic teachings of the Old Testament, the lessons embodied in the New Testament, and the story and teachings of Jesus.
We live in a nation of strangers. Many of us live a hurried and urban life, and we do not even know our neighbors. Most of us live far away from our extended families. We want our church to be a place of peace and fellowship, where all know each other, and where a helping hand is always available. We use our church as a place to learn and to celebrate life. We use our faith as a guide to understanding and living.
We have a deep and enduring commitment to social justice. We believe that our humanity flourishes in freedom. We seek not only to define personal and social problems, but also to understand how our
faith can inform and guide our response to them.
We believe that our spiritual journey is life long and is nourished by fellowship, intellectual and emotional challenge, celebration, caring and commitment.
